David J. Master

David is an Associate at MacDonald & Associates, a boutique employment law firm in Toronto specializing in Canadian Employment Law for both employers and employees.

David has a demonstrated track record of success as an advocate for his clients and has successfully appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Small Claims court. He is also an effective negotiator and has orchestrated a variety of settlements, specifically tailored to the client’s circumstances.

While David assists both employees and employers with all aspects of the employment relationship, David is particularly passionate about the intersection of law and sport. He is currently part of a roster of panelists hearing disputes from local, provincial and national amateur sports leagues and associations. David has heard, ruled and written judgments on disputes as a member on three-person panels and also as a sole panelist.

David enjoys writing and has most recently assisted Natalie C. MacDonald, founding partner of MacDonald & Associates, with the research for the torts chapter in her leading textbook, Extraordinary Damages in Canadian Employment Law, which is currently being updated. David is also a frequent contributor to the MacDonald & Associates articles and has been published recently in other publications, such as the Globe and Mail, Huffington Post and Advocates’ Society.

Additionally, David is Editor-in-Chief of the MacDonald & Associates’ LinkedIn Q & A, providing general information on relevant and important employment law.

While in law school, David spent a summer as a legal intern at the United Nations Headquarters advising employees of their contractual rights during and at the termination of their employment. During articling, David completed an internal secondment with his firm’s employment department where he drafted employment contracts, assisted in the defence of wrongful terminations and unjust dismissal claims and successfully appeared for employers in small claims court.

David earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Windsor where he consistently ranked in the top 10% of his class. During law school, David served as President of Canadian Lawyers Abroad, and the Windsor Law Athletic Society. He also organized fundraising for Windsor’s Downtown Mission.

David is extremely passionate about volunteering and contributes his time to other organizations such as Special Olympics Ontario, Spinal Chord Injury Ontario and Relay for Life. He is also a member of the Ontario Bar Association’s Speakers Bureau and has presented at the Toronto Public Library, most recently, on Workplace Rights of Employees.

Prior to joining MacDonald & Associates, David completed his articles at a leading full-service Toronto law firm. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2016.

In his spare time, David enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling and playing sports. David is active in hockey, softball, golf, squash, tennis and football.
